New record: The 16th new station enters service this year

The Belomorskaya station is between the Khovrino and Rechnoi Vokzal stations on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line.

The Moscow Metro continues to set records. On the north end of Zamoskvoretskaya Line, the new Belomorskaya station has just opened, becoming the 16^thstation to open in 2018.

The Belomorskaya station was built between the Khovrino and Rechnoi Vokzal stations partially due to public request, from people in the nearby districts – Levoberezhny and Khovrino. The city decided to build it as far back as 2011. In August 2013, construction of the 2.9 km extension of the green line began.

The initial plans to simultaneously open the Belomorskaya and Khovrino stations were disrupted in 2014 by the complex hydrogeological conditions that caused a suspension in the construction process. In 2016, by popular demand, the work resumed. The shallow-level column station lies at the intersection of Belomorskaya and Smolnaya streets.

The new station has improved public transit accessibility in these northern districts. Now the Levoberezhny and Khovrino districts, with a total population of some 140,000 people, are within a walking distance of the metro. The city estimates that the station’s daily passenger volume will reach 150,000.

The design was inspired by the landscape of northern Russia. Interior columns and walls are faced with white marble and green Ural serpentinite, and the floors are paved with gray Siberian granite. The platform boasts a mosaic of the architectural ensemble of the Kizhi churchyard (pogost), Solovetsky Monastery and other landmarks in Pomorye. LED strip lights on the ceiling imitate polar lights.

The exterior facades are green − the colour of the Zamoskvoretskaya Line. Passengers with reduced mobility will be able to use a lift.

In 2018, the metro has put 32 km of lines into service and has opened many new stations on the Big Circle Line, the Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya Line and the Solntsevskaya Line.
