Soviet record for metro construction beaten with 32 km of new lines, 15 stations and two depots

Since the onset of the year a record number of metro projects have been commissioned: 15 stations, 32 km of new lines as well as two maintenance depots, head of the Moscow Construction Department Andrei Bochkaryov said.

“This year all records have been broken when it comes to building metro facilities. Under the Soviet government the maximum number of stations that could be constructed in a year was 13. And we have already commissioned 32 km of new lines, 15 stations and two depots,” specified Mr Bochkaryov.

He also noted that 10 more stations are nearly ready.

“We are quite sure that the Belomorskaya station on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line will be up and running before the end of the year as well as Savyolovskaya station on the Big Circle Line,” he added.

In addition to this, as Deputy Moscow Mayor for Urban Development and Construction Marat Khusnullin said earlier, the 6.9-km section of the Nekrasovskaya Line from the Kosino to Nekrasovka stations is almost completed. It’s expected that this section will start being used by passengers before the start of next year as well.

Over 20 stations in three years: Where else will the metro run?

The work on the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD), which will go from the Moscow suburbs across the centre, is in full swing. The trains are expected to run at six-minute intervals just like on the MCC.

“Actually, these are supplementary metro lines but above ground. They will operate in the same manner as the MCC. Comfortable trains and new platforms will surpass all metro standards,” Mr Bochkaryov pointed out.

Two of the first diameters, going from Odintsovo to Lobnya and from Nakhabino to Podolsk  will be opened at the end of next year and the start of the year after that. According to people in the know the Moscow Central Diameters will turn Moscow into the largest transport hub in Europe.
