1.What is the difference between an embassy and a consulate?

An embassy (diplomatic representation) is a state body of foreign relations that represents the state in the host country. Embassies perform a wide range of functions, including protecting rights and interests of its citizens and legal entities in the host state (as a rule, this is the function of embassies’ consular departments).


A consular office (consulate general, consulate, vice-consulate, or consular agency) is a state body of foreign relations that performs consular functions on behalf of its state within the consular district in the territory of the host state. The consular office in the host state is subordinate to the head of the diplomatic mission of the state concerned.


The consular office can operate in the capital along with the existing embassy, although in most cases they function in regions far from the capital, including those with a large diaspora of compatriots of the represented state.

2.In what cases should I contact the consulate?

You should apply to the consulate of your country if you get in an emergency situation, lost your passport, money, or travel documents, and if you are detained by police. Besides, the consulate can supply you with information about the laws and customs of the Russian Federation, peculiarities of the legal status of foreigners; recommendations on where you can apply for additional information on specific issues.


If, while staying in Russia, you need get visa to a third country, you should contact the embassy or consulate of this third country.

Information about the contacts and location of foreign diplomatic missions in Moscow can be found on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Russian Federation.


To find information about your country's embassy, go to the Foreign Ministry website, enter your country's name in the search bar or click on it on the map. You will be taken to the page with the most important news about the diplomatic relations between your country and the Russian Federation. In the lower right corner there will be a link to the embassy's contact details.
