Moscow ranked second among European cities in the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2021 international ranking. It was presented by the Swiss-Israeli StartupBlink research center. London is on the first line of the regional European rating, and Paris is on the third. A year earlier, the Russian capital was in third place.

Moscow became the second in Europe, ahead of strong competitors — Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam. The city’s technology sector development programs helped to provide leadership. We didn’t stop them, despite the pandemic. Of course, we will continue to actively support innovators — with subsidies, consultations, new services, educational and infrastructure projects,” Natalia Sergunina, Deputy Moscow Mayor said.

StartupBlink annually makes a rating of ecosystems for startups based on a vast database, which includes more than a thousand cities, 70 thousand startups, two thousand co-working sites, 800 accelerators around the world. Such parameters as the number and quality of innovative companies, objects of innovative infrastructure, as well as the volume of investments are taken into account.

Among the projects that make Moscow once again one of the top three European leaders are the pilot testing program for innovative solutions, which allows technology businesses to test the latest developments on public and commercial platforms, as well as the Moscow Accelerator program, aimed at scaling innovative solutions in promising industries in partnership with corporations," Alexey Fursin, Head of the Moscow Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development, said.

In the global ranking, Moscow made the top 10 megapolises, remaining its leading position. As in the previous year, the capital of Russia was ranked the ninth in it, leaving behind Tokyo, New Delhi, Seoul and Chicago. San Francisco, New York and Beijing are in the top three places in the world ranking.
