The urban services develop landscaping programs and an environmental monitoring system, as well as conduct environmental awareness-raising activities.

The quality of the environment in Moscow is improving every year. Due to enterprises modernization and new eco-friendly modes of transport, the air pollution is reduced. The natural environment and biodiversity are also carefully preserved.

Protection of natural areas and landscaping program

Moscow is one of the greenest megapolises in the world: 49 percent of the capital's area is occupied by green areas. Over the past 10 years, 30 new specially protected natural sites with a total area of about two thousand hectares have been created, 26 of them - in 2020. Moscow in total has 136 natural landmarks of federal and regional significance. Their total area is 19.5 thousand hectares.

Special programs are being implemented in the city to improve the environment. So, in 2019, the family landscaping project ‘Our Tree’ was launched in the capital. As part of the project, the parents of each newborn Muscovite can choose the desired tree species and plant it in one of the parks. In two years, the townspeople planted 7420 trees: 2376 trees in 2019 and 5044 trees in 2020. Most often, they chose linden - in total, more than 6500 such seedlings were booked. Pine, maple, white willow and sorbus ash are also popular - Muscovites have left more than a thousand applications for each of these species.

Monitoring and education

Moscow services regularly monitor air quality. Information about the air state comes from automatic air pollution monitoring stations, meteorological instruments. In 2020, specialists upgraded 13 air monitoring stations, installed two new stations in the Ochakovo-Matveevskoye and Chertanovo Yuzhnoye districts.

To draw the attention of Muscovites to the need for careful attitude to the environment, environmental awareness-raising activities are held. The number of such events has doubled over the past seven years. If in 2014 their number was 6750, then in 2020 it exceeded 12 thousand.

In order to adapt the events to the online format during the pandemic, the environmental education project #Priroda_na_udalenke (nature protection with          remote working) was created. It combines games, guessing games, tests, master classes, crosswords, quizzes and virtual trips to the eco-centers and natural sites of Moscow. In 2020, specialists conducted more than seven thousand online events, which were attended by more than 30 thousand people. The project became the winner of the Reliable Partner - Ecology contest. To date, more than ten thousand online events have been held, to which more than 500 thousand people joined.

Since 2014, the ecology centers Vorobyovy Gory, Tsarskaya Paseka (Tsar Apiary), Konny Dvor (Horse Yard), Bitsevsky Les (Bitsevsky Forest) and Skvorechnik (Birdhouse), as well as the eco-class Kuzminki-Lyublino have been operating in Moscow. By 2020, their number has increased to nine. Each of them has its own unique specifics, according to which various thematic events are held. This year, the 10th ecology center Tsvetovodstvo (Floriculture) was opened in the city. It is located on the territory of VDNKh.
