Main building of the Matveyevs' Estate restored in Basmanny district
The building of the 19th century is to become a hotel.

The big restoration of the main Matveyevs' estate building located at 21/5 bldg.1 Volkhovsky Pereulok has been completed. It will house a hotel.

Initially, the site belonged to a merchant Stepan Matveyev. Later it changed owners several times.

This one-story brick building with 11 window openings is a cultural heritage site of regional significance. The restoration has lasted here for three years.

'Restoration under the '1 Rouble per 1 Sq M' preferential lease program is always much work, since it includes heritage sites in a critical condition. Investors are aware that before offering a reduced lease rate, they must fully restore a building back to its historical appearance. The main building of the Matveyevs' Estate is one of the 19 monuments restored under this program. Specialists have renovated its unique façades and interiors. The leaseholder gave it a second chance, as it is ready now to house a hotel,' said Head of the Moscow Cultural Heritage Department Alexei Yemelyanov.

During the restoration of the façades, specialists have removed paint and plaster from the walls and plinth, filled the cracks, and treated the surfaces with protective coating. A wooden entresol has been restored, too.

Specialists put much focus on the restoration of the roof and recreation of lost elements of the front façade: platbands, window sills, plaster garlands under the windows, decorative elements in a niche in the centre of the façades and on the entresol's gable. Windows, doors, and metal canopies have been made according to historical drawings, with the original interior layout and parquet on the floor recreated. Stoves and staircases have also been renovated.

The building has now comfortable rooms rearranged to welcome hotel guests, but the grand enfilade and the historical appearance of the interiors have been preserved.
