Curling and film screenings at a skating rink: What else to do in Moscow parks on 23 February
To mark Defender of the Fatherland Day, Moscow parks have prepared free holiday events.

To mark Defender of the Fatherland Day, 19 parks of Moscow’s Department of Culture have prepared dozens of free events for 23 February. They will offer workshops, guided tours and film screenings on a skating rink, as well as curling and laser tag tournaments. Among the parks putting on a festive programme are Gorky Park, Sokolniki Park, Perovsky Park, Bauman Garden and the Hermitage Garden.

Gorky Park and Muzeon Arts Park will offer free quests and themed guided tours. At noon and 3 pm, Muzeon will host a guided tour called Open Air Manoeuvres. Participants will divide up into teams and will receive a map with tasks which will reveal interesting facts about the largest sculpture park.

The Trophies of Great Battles tour will take place at Gorky Park at 1 pm. Visitors will learn that in 1941-1942 half of the park employees went to the front and the park was heavily bombed by German warplanes. Many buildings and structures were destroyed, but the park did not stop operating even for a single day. In addition, tour guides will speak about a spectacular war-time event: exhibitions of trophy weapons that were held on the Pushkinskaya Embankment in 1943-1948.

The quests and tours will begin at the main entrance to the park. Registration is required.

The Hermitage Garden invites everyone to its skating rink with artificial ice. Admission for men will be free the entire day. At 2 pm, curling workshops will be held where sports-lovers will be able to learn the basics of this sport or hone their skills. Master of Sport (curling) Georgy Davtyan, coach of the Russian Paralympic team, will run the training sessions. After the master class, the best players will compete in a tournament. Those who like skating will be able to take part in relays and team games on ice. All events will end at 6 pm.

Those who like watching movies more that doing sports should visit the Bauman Garden, specifically its KinoKatok skating rink. All visitors who have a military identity card can skate there for free. The festive evening will begin at 6 pm with a screening of the Russian film The Age of Pioneers (2017), dedicated to Alexei Leonov and Pavel Belyayev’s space flight aboard the Voskhod-2. The screen is located outside the skating rink, so the film can be seen by both skaters and other park-goers. A disco party on ice will begin at 8 pm and will last two hours.

Between 3 pm and 6 pm the Italian Garden at Vorontsovsky Park will turn into a sports arena where people can play laser tag. A special laser tag venue will be built so that players do not bother other visitors. Preliminary registration is not needed. Equipment will be handed out at the site. Each battle will last about 10 minutes.

Laser tag venues will also open in Babushkinsky Park (near the dance floor) and in the Mitino Landscape Park (on Festivalnaya Square). The tournament will begin at 2 pm and will last two hours; it will involve at least 14 people on two teams (7+7). To take part, please register at +7 499 184 2700. Babushkinsky Park will also host a concert by the PortoMoris cover band, and the Modern brass band will perform in the Mitino Landscape Park. Both concerts will take place before 6 pm. Guests can keep warm thanks to the field kitchens serving buckwheat porridge and hot tea in the parks.

Sokolniki Park will host the Battle Sled annual festival. It will take place on the park’s main tubing slope, the 200-metre Vsepogorka. The theme of the festival will be Military Classics. Participants in the event will design a themed sled. For instance, it can be an aircraft carrier, a fighter or missile system. Two teams have already picked the Soviet KV-1 heavy tank and a Roman battering ram in the shape of a log on wheels.

Competitors will be evaluated on the distance their sled covers, original design and the presentation of their sleds. Winning teams will receive valuable prizes. The Battle Sled competition will begin at 1 pm, preceded by a traditional race in army washbasins. Registration is available on site. Participants should bring their basins to the slope at  noon and decorate them with spray paint, which will be provided.

To learn more, please call the Sokolniki Park administration at +7 926 351 7278 or ask your questions on the festival’s page on the VKontakte social network.

Visitors to Kuzminki Park will be able to take part in a “cardboard battle,” which will take place on the main square. A workshop will be held to help participants create their own cardboard shields, swords and helmets. The event begins at 1 pm. Before the battle, there will be a concert at 11 am at the concert hall (to the right of the administrative building in the park’s central area).
