Techno drummer, hip hop and dinosaurs: City Day festivities at Gorky Park
Visitors will be able to listen to avant-garde electronic music, play sports and enjoy a panorama of Moscow through the eyes of a 1930s architect.

On City Day, Gorky Park will hold Moscow Through Your Own Eyes Festival; the finals of the DMC World DJ Championships; the third Maker Faire Moscow Festival of Digital Art and Creativity; Fields Festival of experimental music; and many sports masterclasses. Artyom Stefanov’s installation Moscow Through Melnikov’s Eyes

Date: 8-9 September

Venue: the park’s balustrade

Outside the main entrance there will be an installation by Artyom Stefanov, dedicated to Konstantin Melnikov. Moscow Through Melnikov’s Eyes is a ten-layer structure presenting the city as it was seen by the Soviet architect and monument designer from the Constructivist period.

Konstantin Melnikov drafted a design for the entrance area which began with the main archway and then led into a garden with flowerbeds and a large fountain. As a result of this project, the park became a model of urban design throughout the country in the 1930s. Today, 90 years later, the image of an ideal place for recreation is being carefully preserved, affecting the life of the city garden. In recent years, the site has become a platform for experimentation and ambitious architectural projects, as well as the most advanced park in Russia.

Maker Faire Moscow Festival of Digital Art and Creativity

Date: 8-9 September

Time: 11 am-7pm

Maker Faire is the leading international festival combining cutting-edge technologies and traditional crafts.

Visitors of all ages will be able to see large 3D printers and mechatronic dinosaurs in operation; learn about blacksmithing, pottery, copyright electronics and robotics; get acquainted with media artists and digital art works; carry out scientific experiments and launch rockets.

Admission is free, preliminary registration is required (theregistration form is in Russian).

Russian finals of DMC World DJ Championships

Date: 8 September

Venue: on the square, near the fountain

Time: 1 pm-11 pm

Visitors will find out which DJ will represent Russia at DMC (Disco Mix Club) London – the DJ analogue of the Olympic Games. To gain victory, contenders will have six minutes to prove that their sound and equipment are the best in Russia.

Headliners include Mix Master Mike, all-time DJ of hip-hop groups Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill; DJ ShortKut, a member of the turntable team The Invisibl Skratch Piklz; and DJ Skills, last year’s World Online DJ winner, seven-time winner of DMC France. There will be performances by top Russian hip hop DJs. The hosts will be Ligalize and MC QuickSan.

Fields Festival of Experimental Music

Date: 9 September

Time: 4 pm-11 pm

The motto of the fourth Fields Festival of Experimental Music is Open Borders, which means erasing geographical, stylistic, cultural and subcultural boundaries.

Folk through the prism of rave, arena rock played on toy instruments, electronic music as interpreted by academic musicians, a techno mix with theremin and 21st century new-age – all this will be presented on the one stage. Admission is free.

The show headliners will be Islam Chipsy and EEK (Egypt), Laraaji (United States) and Alexei Bobrovsky who will give a live techno drumming performance.

Sports masterclasses

Date: 8-9 September

Time: from morning to evening

Throughout Gorky and Muzeon parks, sports masterclasses will be held by coaches and teams of enthusiasts. They will include recreational qigong for adults and children, tango (Russian and Spanish languages), basic fencing techniques, short- and long-distance marathon Run for Help, contemporary dance, stretching, hustle and lectures on cycling.

City Day excursion marathon

Date: 8-9 September

Time: 11 am-5 pm

The excursion marathon Moments in Gorky Park History will take place over the two festive days.

Visitors will learn the history of the park, from its origins to the present day. They will find out about the famous Girl with an Oar and two models who posed for sculptor Ivan Shadr; the parachute tower; Maxim Gorky’s favourite flowers; and the gazebos of Golitsyn wall on Pushkinskaya Embankment.

One more attraction will be the Go Gorky Park quest. Those attending this event will be able to learn the history of the park by solving difficult puzzles. The game-journey travels through historical epochs, with tests, prize draws, puzzles and children’s riddles,which even adults might fail to solve.
