77 Moscow museums to offer free admission during New Year holidays
No tickets needed for exhibitions at 77 city museums on 2–7 January.

At the start of the New Year between 2–7 January, there will be free exhibition days at 77 Moscow Department of Culture museums. The most recent interesting exhibitions will be free of charge between 2–7 January. For example, the Boundless Ryazanov, an exhibition dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the famous director, will be open at Novy Manezh during these days. The display has three sections on his films, life and poetry. An exhibition titled “Where is my home?” and dedicated to Marina Tsvetayeva’s 125th anniversary of birth will open at the Tsvetayeva Museum. It will have her workbooks, notes and remarks as well as plans of future creations together with drafts. Visitors will be able to see items related to her art from various years.

“The New Year season is a great time to see the most popular 2017 projects as well as new thematic exhibitions. In addition to this, many venues have prepared special festive programmes for visitors,” said a spokesperson at the Department of Culture.

The free thematic exhibitions also include the Winter Kaleidoscope at the Vysotsky House Museum on Taganka, with watercolours, pictures and drawings showing the nature, people and cities in the winter. The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics will show unique porcelain souvenirs, figurines, busts, vases and also dinnerware related to space. The Garden Ring Museum invites visitors to attend the free Christmas Moscow exhibition presenting pictures of old city districts on New Year’s Eve and also Christmas Eve by Natalya Sokolovskaya.

Among the special festive programmes, there will be a concert given by the musicians who won the Skryabin Scholarship contest at the Skryabin Museum dedicated to the composer’s anniversary. It is necessary to register on the museum’s website in advance for this concert. On Christmas Day, 7 January, people visiting the Kolomenskoye open-air museum will be able to take part in festive celebrations. Christmastide at Kolomenskoye will include games, songs, carols and performances given by clowns and folk ensembles. Visitors will also be able to learn about Christmastide rituals in various parts of Russia as well as find out more about the roots of the holy feast.

Some places can only be visited by appointment. For example, if you want to visit the Daughter exhibition at the Mayakovsky State Museum in Krasnaya Presnya Street, it will be necessary to register on the museum’s website. The opening of the exhibition was one of the most popular events of the year.

Admission to most of the main exhibitions at Moscow museums will be free at the start of the year but at some places payment will be required. More information is available on the official museum websites.
