The tree on Slavyanskaya Square will bear images of Konstantin Stanislavsky, Yevgeny Vakhtangov and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko.

To mark the New Year, about 3,900 installations and 268 fir trees will decorate Moscow, said Head of the Moscow Department of Housing and Utilities Gasan Gasangadzhiyev.

“In all, 268 New Year’s trees will be installed in public places citywide,” said Gasangadzhiyev, pointing out that new such venues are constantly appearing.

This year, a decision was taken to use LED lighting to save up to a million kilowatts of energy.

According to Yelena Zaitseva, general director of the company responsible for Moscow’s New Year design, this year’s theme will be Theatrical Moscow. “Since everyone loves theatres, the capital will turn into a large theatre for the New Year holidays. Every square, street and shop where people will drop in for gifts and goods will be dressed up in the style of theatres,” she explained.

By 15 December, the tree on Slavyanskaya Square will be decorated with portraits of outstanding theatre directors Konstantin Stanislavsky, Yevgeny Vakhtangov and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. Besides that, theatre masks will be put on the New Year trees to bring to mind different plays.

Yelena Zaitseva also said that about 25 venues with ice slides and photo zones will open this year.
