Outdoor observation deck opens 85 metres up at Ostankino Tower

An 85 metre high outdoor observation deck has opened to visitors at the Ostankino TV Tower. It is on a technical deck, until now only open to weather service personnel.

Visitors will see one of 21 weather station masts up close for the first time. This huge mast holds sensors that take wind direction and speed, air temperature and humidity. Guides will tell visitors about the operation of the weather forecasting system which is considered the highest in Moscow.

Visiting the balcony is part of a technical route launched on the Ostankino TV Tower in May. This tour explains how the module is arranged. Booking is by telephone +7 (495) 926-61-11 or on the tower’s web site.

The 10 square metre viewing zone is surrounded by a protective metal structure for safety. All sightseers will receive helmets before a tour. Up to 10 people can fit onto the outdoor platform.

Visitors will be able to see the Botanical Garden, the Ostankino Technical Centre, the Moscow International Business Centre and other landmarks toward the west and northwest of the city, from the platform. “The opening the observation deck is timed to coincide with the 50^th anniversary of Ostankino TV Tower, which is this year,” said the public relations and media department of the Moscow Regional Centre (Ostankino Tower) branch of the Russian Broadcasting Network.

The Moscow Regional Centre reminded readers that an indoor observation platform with a panoramic view of Moscow at a height of 337 metres is also open for visiting.

The weather forecasting service was set up on Ostankino Tower in 1967. Now it includes weather forecast equipment operating on the tower and on the grounds around it. The highest installation is 503 metres up. Other equipment is mounted 85, 128, 201, 253 and 385 metres off the ground. Currently, Ostankino TV Tower weather forecast equipment is capable of forecasting the weather in real time.
