City cinemas to host about 30 screenings in honour of the director’s 65th birthday.

On 6-26 July, the MosKino cinema network of the Department of Culture will organise free retrospective screenings of films by Karen Shakhnazarov in honour of the director’s 65th birthday. Audiences can see 14 films during 27 planned screenings.

“The programme of retrospective screenings of films by Karen Shakhnazarov comprises almost all his directorial efforts, starting with his first full-length film Kind Men released in 1979 and awarded several prizes, and finishing with films that came out in the 2000s, for example, White Tiger. Audiences will also see the director’s other films featuring his characteristic vivid imagery, richness and phantasmagorical motifs,” the MosKino press service reported.

The first of 27 free screenings will take place at the Kosmos cinema on Thursday, 6 July. The film will be The Winter Evening in Gagra, a musical drama made in 1985 about once famous tap dancer Alexei Beglov, whom a young dancer from Siberia asks for help.

Six cinemas are taking part in the programme: Molodyozhny (Tekstilshchiki District, Southeastern Administrative Area), Saturn (Sviblovo, Northeastern Administrative Area), Vympel (Babushkinsky District, Northeastern Administrative Area), Salyut (Akademichesky District, Southwestern Administrative Area), Yunost (Shchukino, Northwestern Administrative Area) and Kosmos (Ostankino, Northeastern Administrative Area).

Karen Shakhnazarov, film director, screenwriter, producer and Mosfilm CEO, was born on 8 July 1952. The first film to bring him fame as a director and screenwriter was the musical film We Are from Jazz, which came out in the USSR in 1983.

His films have received over 50 international and national awards, were twice accepted in the Cannes Film Festival and twice nominated for an Oscar.
