At least 50 free dance workshops will be organised in 14 Moscow parks this summer
Workshops in the hustle, the Lindy Hop and the Argentinean tango will be in full swing, along with outdoor fitness and yoga classes.

This summer, Moscow residents and tourists will have the opportunity to try their hand at dancing if they attend one of at least 50 dance workshops to be offered for free in 14 city parks controlled by the Moscow Department of Culture. For those more interested in keeping fit, yoga and fitness sessions will be available in green outdoor areas. No previous training or booking is required. The newly trained dancers will have the chance to show off their skills at dance parties organised for the occasion.

Gorky Park: hustle, minuet and Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll 

Dance workshops and dance parties will be offered daily at two sites in Gorky Park until 30 September.

Four dance floors dominated by the hustle have already opened on Andreyevskaya Embankment. People have been swinging to hustle rhythms between 6 and 11 pm daily. Professionals have been teaching the basics of this Latin American dance from 6 pm to 7 pm, followed by dance parties between 7 and 11 pm to practice their dance techniques.

Those who prefer other dance styles will find exciting choices in Gorky Park. Fiery Brazilian rhythms will make their heads spin on Fridays and on weekends between 6 pm and 11 pm. On Tuesdays (7 pm-11 pm) and Saturdays (3 pm-6 pm), the dance floors are taken over by sport dancers, while European (or historical) dances from the 17th-20th centuries, including minuet, quadrille, polonaise and others are performed on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays between 6 pm and 11 pm.

Exciting dance workshops on Andreyevskaya Embankment already include bachata, salsa, and a Cuban dance called Son, and also African kizomba and Dominican Merengue.

Daily workshops will kick off near the Pioneer Cinema on 26 June. Early birds will be able to join stretching exercises in the park in the mornings on Monday, Wednesday and on weekends.

Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll knacks and boogie-woogie rhythms will be practiced on Saturdays between 5 pm and 7 pm and on Sundays between 6 pm and 8 pm. Historical dances (polonaise, quadrille and others) will be taught on Wednesdays between 7 pm and 8 pm, followed by dance parties from 8 pm until 9.30 pm.

African beat fans will be introduced to kizomba on Mondays from 7 pm to 8 pm. Workshops and dance parties with swing, salsa, Australian shuffle and retro dances (the twist, the Charleston, blues and B-pop) will be held at the same site.

Muzeon: Hatha Yoga and Rockabilly Jive

On 30 May, dance and yoga workshops started at the wooden terrace at Muzeon Arts Park. On Fridays, between 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm, Rockabilly Jive will be on at the park. This is a mixture of Rock’n’Roll and country. These will be followed by a dance evening until 10.30 pm. Workshops and dancing on Sunday evenings will be devoted to swing, and on Wednesdays to Argentinian dancing between 7 pm and 11 pm. Hatha Yoga asanas will be taught and practiced on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Sokolniki Park: Boogie-woogie, hip-hop and dancing for those over …ties

The Rotunda stage on the main alley at Sokolniki Park is the traditional venue for dance workshops and evenings.

Older visitors will enjoy the radio disco For Those Over …ties, organised daily, except Mondays.

Between 4 June and 26 August, dance and fitness classes will be held every second Saturday from 5 pm until 6.30 pm. On the agenda will be various dance styles, including hip-hop, house, dance hall, and Vogue – a style based on the runway walk, twists and falls, and model poses.

Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll will be available every Thursday from 5 pm until 7 pm between 8 June and 24 August. Boogie-woogie will be taught on Fridays from 7 pm until 9 pm from 9 June to 25 August.

An active programme combining Latin American zumba and fitness elements is already on from 4 pm to 5 pm on Saturdays, and will run until 16 September.

Twist and tango at Hermitage Garden

Those nostalgic for the 1950s fiery dance will enjoy open workshops in the twist, boogie-woogie and Rockabilly Jive available in the smaller summer house at Hermitage Garden from 1 June until 31 August. The classes run on Thursdays between 7 pm and 10 pm.

Beginning 2 June until the end of the summer, regular classes in Argentinean tango and salsa will be taught in the park from 7 pm till 9.30 pm.

Pair and solo swing dance will be practiced from 7 June until the end of September. Lindy Hall and Charleston classes will run on Wednesdays between 7 pm and 9 pm.

Open lessons in Scottish and Welsh dancing will be offered from 28 June until 31 August on Wednesdays between 8 pm and 10 pm. It is recommended that dancers wear comfortable closed shoes. Lessons will only take place in good weather.

Bauman Garden: Swing and waltz

Jazz music will fill Bauman Garden from 1 June until 31 August. Open classes in pair swing dance – Lindy Hop and boogie-woogie, will be held on the outdoor stage. Both experienced dancers andbeginners are welcome.

The Lindy Hop will be the featured dance on Mondays and boogie-woogie on Wednesdays. Beginners will start at 7 pm while more advanced dancers (with at least three months’ experience) at 8 pm. Waltz classes for older dancers, both in pairs and singles, will be held on Fridays between 6 and 7 pm.

Tagansky Park: Lindy Hop and Charleston

Those who have a knack for swing will enjoy dance classes at Tagansky Park, starting on 2 June until the end of the summer.

Workshops will cover three styles: the Lindy Hop, boogie-woogie and the Charleston. On Tuesdays, beginners are invited to Charleston classes from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm, and more experienced dancers are welcome to join boogie-woogie from 7.30 pm until 8.30 pm. Beginners will be able to learn the basics of boogie-woogie on Fridays from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm, and Lindy Hop dancers with at least two months’ experience will continue to perfect their skills from 7 pm to 8.30 pm.

Izmailovsky Park: Latin dance and fitness

Beginning 5 June, Latin dance classes will open for everyone at the Solnechnaya dancefloor in Izmailovsky Park. Latin will be taught on Thursdays at 5.30 pm, while salsa, bachata and salsateca will be practiced on Fridays at 4.30, 5.15 and 6 pm. On Sundays, workshops will switch to an Asian theme: belly dance classes will begin at 4 pm. Saturday plans include a fitness dance programme: Zumba at 5 pm and kizomba at 6 pm. For young visitors, a mini disco will be offered as a separate programme on Sundays at 1 pm.

Fili Park: Modern jazz, tango milonga, salsa and bachata

Dance classes in Fili Park will be organised at the art studio or on the secondary stage near the main entrance. The basics of tango milonga will be taught every Saturday from 8 pm to 10 pm, starting from 1 June until 31 August. Master classes in modern jazz dance will begin on 1 July on Saturdays from 6 pm to 7 pm, and also salsa and bachata classes on Saturdays from 7 pm to 8 pm to run until 31 August.

People of more advanced age can attend workshops in historical and modern ballroom dance, with classes held on Mondays and Wednesdays from midday until 3 pm, and also on Fridays from 7 pm until 9.30 pm.

Kuzminki, Perovsky and other parks: Zumba, club Latin and waltz

Open lessons in Zumba will begin on the main stage of Kuzminki Park on Sundays from 4 June until 27 August, and Body Balance classes will be held on the green next to the white summerhouse. The Body Balance workout combines elements of yoga, pilates, stretching and kinesiotherapy (a trend in physiotherapy). Zumba classes will run from midday through 1 pm, and Body Balance training from 1 pm until 2 pm. Dance evenings for older people are offered every summer weekend from 4 pm to 6 pm in the dance summerhouse next to the main stage.

Zumba classes will also be available in Sadovniki Park on Saturdays from 12.30 pm until 1 pm at the site in front of the bike hire tent.

Dance parties are already in full swing near the stage in Vorontsovsky Park. Dance styles change every time, giving visitors the chance to learn elements of Latina, bachata, waltz, tango and others throughout the summer. Classes for older people begin at 11 am, followed by children’s lessons at noon for kids aged five and over. These are group lessons that will run until late August.

Latin American dance teachers will wait for learners on the wooden stage in Perovsky Park from 1 June every Friday from 7 pm until 8 pm, and lessons in swing doubles dance Shag will be available on Saturdays from 5 pm to 6 pm.

From 2 June, Club Latina classes have been running in the Green Theatre of Babushkinsky Park every Tuesday from 6 pm to 7 pm, Zumba on Fridays and Sundays from 6 pm to 7 pm, and Argentinean tango on Sundays from 6 pm to 7 pm.

Dance evenings for Those Over …ties are held in Lianozovsky Park on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 3 pm to 6 pm.

Zumba classes will be taught in Artyom Borovik Park from 5 June, between 7 pm and 8 pm every Monday until the end of the summer.
