New road marking season begins in Moscow

New road marking season begins in Moscow
The remarking of city streets will be conducted at night to avoid traffic restrictions.

On 3 May, the seasonal work to remark the city’s streets and roads began. The city will concentrate on streets near schools, outpatient clinics and other socially important facilities. The next step will be new markings on motorways, at pedestrian crossings and public transit stops.

Cold and thermoplastic paint are used with embedded microscopic glass beads to intensify the light-reflecting properties of the lines. “This improves road safety at night,” said the Automobile Roads State Enterprise press service. They added that the striping would be conducted mostly at night to avoid inconveniencing drivers.

“Over 2.7 million square metres of paint of different types will be applied, including lane markings, road direction arrows, traffic guide indicators and directional arrows. During this spring and summer, the refreshed markings will appear in 4,500 streets and roads,” added Automobile Roads.

The street marking programme will include roads on the seasonal repair schedule and streets being rebuilt under the My Street programme. In addition, new diagonal crossings will be provided at 19 intersections. The new markings will save pedestrians time while crossing intersections diagonally instead of waiting for traffic lights twice. Diagonal crossings will appear on intersections in eight Moscow administrative areas.

The seasonal road repair campaign began in late April. It will last until mid-October. Over this period, over 18 million square metres of asphalt will be replaced.
