The Music in the Metro project offers new venues
Passengers of the Moscow Metro will hear 200 performers and bands. Musicians will play at 15 station venues all year.

The Music in the Metro project has kicked off in metro stations with well-known musician Valery Syutkin’s concert for Moscow Metro passengers. With accompaniment, he performed the song “42 Minutes under the Ground” and other hits in the entrance hall of the Borovitskaya and Biblioteka imeni Lenina stations.

“The Music in the Metro project is hitting new heights today. It’s great that the Moscow Metro gives young people a chance to present their talents and their music, as well as receive some support from riders,” Syutkin said.

Musicians will play at 15 venues this season. Metro passengers will hear 200 performers and bands, among them musicians playing musical saws and Tibetan singing bowls, a young group performing Beatle songs, and a jazz band that combines music and acrobatics.

The concert schedule is available on the Music in the Metro website. Musicians will play all year. They will be allowed to choose the location and the date. On weekdays they will perform from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and from 8:00 pm until 10:00 pm, and on weekends from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm.

The musicians had to audition in a competition. First, musical groups sent applications with samples of their songs. In total, over 1,000 applications were received. Then the most interesting performers were invited for the audition. Judges reviewed technique, music, and visual image. They chose outstanding musicians with a wide range of instruments from the Hang to the vilkophone, powerful voices and interesting interpretations.

A Music in the Metro project pilot programme started last May. It comprised over 1,500 shows in various genres. Musicians were allowed to play at Mayakovskaya, Vystavochnaya and Kurskaya stations. Now 12 more venues have been equipped for them.
