A memorial plate to cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife, famous opera singer Galina Vishnevskaya, has been unveiled in Moscow. The memorial sign adorns the building on Gazetny Pereulok where the couple lived.
The sculptor is People’s Artist of Russia Alexander Rukavishnikov. He depicted the couple under an umbrella. Galina Vishnevskaya holds her husband’s arm and a bouquet of flowers in the other hand.
“It should have happened long ago, and it has finally happened. A memorial plate has appeared on the building where the musician lived. It will grace this building, just as Rostropovich and Vishnevskaya used to grace it with their presence,” said Deputy Mayor for Social Development Leonid Pechatnikov.
The memorial plate was made on the initiative and at the expense of the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation. It was unveiled on the musician’s birthday, 27 March 2017, when he would have turned 90 years.
In addition, the 8th International Mstislav Rostropovich Festival will start tonight. It will be held in Moscow and St Petersburg until 4 April.
