The beach season in Moscow may open as early as the middle of May due to the abnormally warm beginning of spring, said Anton Kulbachevsky, head of the Department for Environmental Management and Protection.
“I haven’t seen such a warm March in our region for a long time. For this reason, we may open the swimming season earlier, on 10 or 15 May. As soon as the weather is warm enough, I’ll go inspect Moscow beaches and check the water quality myself, as I do every year,” he said.
The beach season in Moscow usually starts on 12 June. Last year, Muscovites had 121 leisure areas by water at their disposal. However, swimming was allowed at only 10 (in the middle of summer on 7) beaches. Before the season begins, all leisure areas by water and the shore will be thoroughly inspected. Experts of the Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare are checking the water and sand quality, the state of bathroom and shower facilities, cafes, restaurants and snack bars.
According to weather forecasts, this March could become the warmest on record in Moscow. A small temperature drop awaits Muscovites in the middle of the week, but warm weather will come back to the city by the weekend. The air temperature will be eight to ten degrees above normal.
