The 737-metre ropeway will be part of the sports zone for international competitions.

The ropeway over the Moskva River will be launched in 2018 ahead of the FIFA World Cup next year. It will link the observation deck near Moscow State University on Vorobyovy Gory and Luzhniki stadium. This has come from the  Deputy Moscow Mayor for Urban Development and Construction Marat Khusnullin.

“Workers are now providing monolithic foundations for the cableway supports. This is being done at a good pace and will be completed on time,” Khusnullin noted.

The 737-metre cableway will run above the Moskva River. It will be used as an aerial lift to the ski slopes used by sports school and also to the ski jumping platform. The cable car will perform three functions all at once: sightseeing, sports and transportation. In the winter it will lift athletes to the ski jump.

By 2018, the ski jump built in 1953 will be upgraded on Vorobyovy Gory followed by the creation of a sports zone there which will be used for conducting international events.

“The historical sports zone will be restored for both professional and amateur sports,” Marat Khusnullin said earlier.

The cableway will end its route near the Luzhniki Big Sports Arena which will host the opening match, one of the semifinals and the finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The matches will be conducted from 14 June to 15 July. In Moscow both the Luzhniki and the Spartak stadiums will be used.
