The Central (Shchyolkovo) Bus Station will close for reconstruction on 24 April. The Moscow Region bus routes will stop under a ramp across from the station to minimise inconvenience for commuters.
“During the reconstruction, commuter buses will stop under a ramp across from the Shchyolkovo Bus Station. We’ll arrange platforms and put up information signs there,” said Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow and Head of the Department for Transport and Road Infrastructure.
Some 1,000 buses run on 24 routes from the station every day, transporting approximately 25,000 people to Shchyolkovo, Balashikha, Chernogolovka, Monino and other suburbs.
Mr Liksutov said that 60 interregional and 20 international routes would be relocated to other bus stations and stops, including the Yuzhnye Vorota station. “The carriers are choosing the most convenient relocation areas. The Moscow bus stations and stops have additional facilities for servicing these routes,” he said.
Buses from the Shchyolkovo station currently depart along five lines: the western line (to Minsk and Chisinau), the eastern line (to Naberezhnye Chelny and Yoshkar Ola), the south-eastern line (to Volgograd and Tambov), the northern line (to St Petersburg and Pskov) and the southern line (to Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don). Buses running to some of the destinations, for example Tambov, Volgograd, Minsk, Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don, also depart from the Yuzhnye Vorota Bus Station.
The three-story Shchyolkovo Bus Station building was built in 1971 and needs to be overhauled. The renovated station will look like a glass ship. It will have wide loading and unloading platforms, spacious ticket and waiting rooms, as well as a café, shops and a cinema. Here passengers will be able to wait comfortably before their departure.
