The competition will bring together both amateur and legendary ice skaters.

On 23 February, the VDNKh ice rink (National Exhibition of Economic Achievement) will welcome spectators to the Moscow Lightning festival of speed skating.

Spectators will see short-track competitions and other races. Participants will be divided by age into several groups: children (up to 10 years old), teens (up to 14), juniors (up to 18), young people (up to 29), adults (up to 45), masters (up to 60) and veterans (60+). Sprints will take place from 11 am to 2 pm and from 6 pm to 7 pm. There will be 18 categories including “The Fastest Young Woman,” “The Fastest Teen,” “Speed Skating Veteran” and so on.

Nikolai Gulyayev, who won the gold medal in speed skating at the 1988 Olympics, will be taking part in the competition. Gulyayev is head of the Moscow Department of Sport and Tourism.

The high point of the festival will be a duel race that will feature Russia’s promising young skaters from the city’s youth sports schools. The race will be a two-win elimination event around the Peoples’ Friendship fountain. A concert featuring popular hit performers will be held from 2 pm to 3 pm and from 7 pm to 8 pm.
