“Journey to Christmas” expanding the programme of free New Year tours
“The Journey to Christmas” festival is inviting visitors to take part in free tours to make the winter holiday in Moscow informative, educational and entertaining.

The Moscow House of Nationalities has prepared 30 themed walks through the New Year city for tourists. The project “We Walk around Moscow” has dramatically expanded its original programme and now will conduct 40 free tours, including several new ones, in the first week of 2017 alone.

Tour guides from the Moscow House of Nationalities will tell Muscovites and tourists about Christmas and New Year traditions. People will learn what Father Frost looks like, what his name is and what carriage he rides in different countries, when the Snow Maiden first appeared and what sisters she has.  Also, tourists will learn what gifts are traditionally given for Christmas and what nice things people treat themselves to on Christmas Eve.

Moscow has a lot of festive traditions. Guides will speak about Christmas in merchants’ houses, noblemen’s mansions and at the imperial court, where Muscovites used to buy gifts and why it was believed that Christmas purchases brought luck. Those who take part in the walks will learn what plays were performed at city theatres during New Year holidays, how New Year festivities were filmed and where Muscovites and their children would go sliding and ice skate.

In the company of their tour guides, guests of the festival will walk along the main shopping streets, such as Petrovka, Kuznetsky Most, Tverskaya and Bolshaya Dmitrovka and the brightly decorated Tverskoy Boulevard and Arbat Street. They will visit Red Square and Alexandrovsky Garden, Kamergersky Pereulok and Stoleshnikov Pereulok. At the same time, they will learn how Christmas was celebrated by British, French, Greek, German and other people who used to live in Moscow, and will visit districts popular among foreigners in the past.

Tourists who take part in walks along Tverskaya, Varvarka, Nikolskaya, Kuznetsky Most and Myasnitskaya streets and Kamergersky Pereulok, will learn about traditional Christmas food and historical Moscow games and entertainment.

In addition, on 2 January the tour “Christmas Entertainment: from Pushkin to Mayakovsky” will inform tourists how noblemen feasted in a big way. The “Unknown Shabolovka” tour will describe New Year traditions of the Soviet period. It was on Shabolovka Street that the first Blue Light TV show was recorded in 1962. The project will also continue the sequence of popular tours dedicated to Silver Age poets.

To take part in the walks, tourists can enroll on the websites of the Moscow House of Nationalities and of “We Walk around Moscow” project.
