According to forecasters, the night of 15 to 16 December will be the coldest this week. Temperatures could reach 16-17 degrees below zero in the city and 20-25 degrees below zero in the Moscow Region, the Hydrometeorological Centre of Russia reported.
So far, the coldest night since the beginning of the winter has been the night of 13 to 14, when the temperature reached 17 degrees below zero. An anticyclone brought this week’s freezing weather to Moscow, with temperatures falling off dramatically at night.
The cold spell will continue until the end of the week. On Wednesday, 14 December, it may snow due to the approaching cyclone and its atmospheric front. It will be mostly cloudy. During the day, temperatures will be five to seven degrees below zero. Icing is possible. There will be west winds at speeds of up to 10 metres per second.
On the night of 14 to 15 December, an anticyclone formed in southern Scandinavia will reach Moscow. The temperature may drop in the morning. During the day, the expected temperature is 9 to 11 degrees below zero.
On 16 December, the temperature will continue to drop, reaching 17 degrees below zero at night and about 11 degrees below zero during the day. There will be north-western winds at speeds of up to eight metres per second.
At the weekend, the weather will change. Another cyclone and its atmospheric front will shift the anticyclone to the south and bring light snow. On Saturday, 17 December, the temperature will be between 11 and 16 degree below zero at night and down to eight degrees below zero during the day. On Sunday, 18 December, the warming will continue: the temperature will be three to eight degrees below zero at night and zero to five degrees below zero during the day. Snow is also expected.
