Vibrant colours of autumn: flowers to admire at VDNKh

VDNKh has entered its velvet season: a special period in autumn when one can still enjoy various annual and perennial plants in bloom. The exhibition alleys are buried in begonia, mealycup sage, verbena, alyssum, and other flowers. If you are looking for autumn sceneries to admire or unique photoshoot locations to try out, the Central Alley, flower gardens next to the Friendship of Peoples Fountain, Pavilion No. 1 Central, Michurin Garden, southern and northern rose gardens, and other VDNKh corners are waiting for you.
Fragrant alyssum and magnificent begonia
In September, VDNKh turns into a great spot for flower watching. Fiery red and golden echinaceas and rudbeckias, tall ears of knotweeds, elegant hostas with white and lavender flowers, and other lush perennial plants can be found next to the Central Alley, the Friendship of Peoples Fountain and Pavilion No. 1 Central. Ornamental grasses further accentuate their beauty-a nice autumn touch to the exhibition. There are miscanthus sinensis, molinia, reed grass, and deschampsia.

Michurin Garden behind the Cosmos Pavilion is the place to go if you want to appreciate some miscanthus and reed grass. And at the main entrance arch, the visitors are greeted with the “Soul of Russia” flowerbeds that are covered with blooming showy stonecrops.
Phlox paniculata is growing along the northern loop of the VDNKh ring road, around the Friendship of Peoples Fountain and near the Pavilion No. 62 (International Ballet Centre). September is the last chance when one can still catch these white, pale pink, fuchsia or blue flowers in bloom.

The principal hiking trails are adorned with annual plants, such as begonia, ageratum, verbena bonariensis, and alyssum. Scenic blankets of Big Begonias and ornamental grasses has covered the landscape park and the quiet park next to Moskvarium.
Photoshoot amidst roses and hydrangeas
When visiting the exhibition this autumn, one might consider stopping by the northern and southern rose gardens along the Central Alley, full of roses going through the second wave of flowering. They are accompanied by mealycup sage, sweet alyssum, and echinacea. Additionally, rose beds are decorated with foxtail barley, yarrow, and scabiosa.

Visitors can also enjoy the scent of roses in the Pavilion No. 84 House of Culture. The varieties includes Mona Lisa, Tornado, Bonica-82, Angela, Cervia, Mary Ann, and Hans Gönewein. There are also large-flowered Chippendale hybrid tea roses whose rich aroma is reminiscent of peach and mango.
Elegant hydrangeas are another jewel of VDNKh. They can be found next to the Pavilion No. 5 Physics or along the northern loop of the ring road, specifically the vanille fraise hydrangeas with lush pink panicles. Visitors of the exhibition can also admire blooming hydrangeas in the Uzbek Park and at the Wedding Palace. And in front of the Pavilion No. 29 Floriculture and Landscaping, there are grandiflora hydrangeas with huge pale pink, lime green and white panicles.
