Digital variable message signs (VMS), or matrix signs, on Moscow roads now warn drivers of dangerous road sections. This mostly concerns intersections with high accident rates.

“We hope VMS will encourage drivers to slow down and be more focused on the road,” said Vadim Yuryev, head of the Moscow Government's Traffic Management Centre.

A total of 159 variable message signs are operating in Moscow now, including on outbound motorways and the Third Ring Road. The signs inform drivers about congestion, traffic restrictions and road closures, show weather forecasts and count the way time until the next road landmark.

Seventeen large VMS were already installed on the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) to show information about recently stolen cars, including specifications, colour, brand and number plate information.
