When going on a picnic, it is important to remember a few simple rules of how to stay safe and not harm the environment.

In Russia, May holidays are traditionally associated with picnics in the open air: at your dacha, in a park, in the forest or by the water. Meanwhile, the fire season has already started in the capital. Keep this in mind especially if you plan to grill kebabs out in the nature. The city’s municipal services remind our readers how to organize recreation and comply with all safety requirements.

Grill—weigh the pros and cons

In city parks and squares it is allowed to use open fire only in specially equipped sites with a fire pit or barbecue area. It is forbidden to start a fire in the forest.

After the picnic is over, do not forget to put out the coals. If the grill is disposable, take it with you and leave it in a blue recycling bin. Metal is a valuable raw material that is accepted for recycling.

Take care of glass and collect plastic

Glass bottles and jars, glass shards in sunny weather can work as lenses. They will focus the sun’s rays at one point—the temperature will rise and if dry branches, grass or other flammable materials are near, a fire may break out.

In addition, broken glass makes the soil unsuitable for plants and poses danger to animals. When glass shatters, it releases alkali, which reduces soil fertility, and it is very difficult to clean up the shards.

Collect glass containers and take them to a blue recycling bin. In addition, glass can also be left in special containers for separately collected garbage—in green “bells.” Glass does not lose its properties when recycled, so it can be reused indefinitely.

But it is not just glass containers that can work as a lens —connecting the sun’s rays at one point, heating the surface to high temperatures and causing a fire. Clear plastic bottles filled with water can do this as well. Do not try to get rid of them and other plastic waste by burning them in a fire—burning releases many harmful substances. Better bring your plastic for recycling—this recyclable material can be left in blue bins and yellow “bells.”

No napkins or wrappers left behind

Tissue and paper napkins, cardboard boxes, oiled textiles and paper, wrappers and plastic containers are all waste materials that are easily ignited. A fire can be caused by a spark, a dropped cigarette butt, or heat from sunlight.

Take leftover food containers stained with oil or sauces, mustard tubes and mayonnaise wrappers, used paper and cloth napkins, towels, and hygiene products with you and dispose of them in gray mixed waste containers.

Torn shoes, socks or other items of clothing should not be left behind in nature either—a gray bin will do for them.

Since the beginning of April, equipped picnic sites in Moscow parks are once again available for residents and guests of the capital. You can book them only via the Mosbilet service, choosing a convenient time and place. This allows city residents to plan their vacations in advance and spend time in nature as comfortably as possible. There is a fee for reserving sites.

In the parks under the jurisdiction of the capital’s Department of Culture, all conditions for safe recreation have been created: fireproof grills, coal and sand boxes, garbage cans and information boards with rules of precaution have been installed. There you can enjoy nature, cook kebabs and spend time with your friends and family.
