In 2025, five international movie projects will be shot in Moscow

Moscow consolidates its status as one of the international centers for the film industry development. In 2025, Moscow specialists plan to implement five joint projects with foreign colleagues. Natalia Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, told about it.

“Filming will take place in the Moskino Cinema Park and in other venues of the city. Representatives from Brazil, Thailand, Egypt and Cameroon will take part in the film production. Companies from 10 more countries are interested in cooperation, including Belarus, China, Turkey and Indonesia. Negotiations are already underway with them,” Natalia Sergunina said.

An example of cooperation between cinematographers in 2024 was the Indian film “The Greatest of All Time”. Several of its scenes were filmed on the Patriarch Bridge, Theater and Manege squares. It was possible to organize the process thanks to the Cinema Platform “Moskino”. In addition, with its help it is convenient to rent pavilions, studios, props and costumes.

During the past year, screenings of domestic films were held abroad. Thus, as part of the Moscow Film Festival in Thailand, residents of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket Island saw the films “Challenge”, “Heart of Parma”, “Libereya: Treasure Hunters”, “The Humpbacked Horse” and “Reversible Reality”.

The works of Moscow animators are in demand on the world market. They demonstrated their projects at the XX International Festival of Cartoons and Animation in the Chinese city of Hangzhou. Representatives of the three companies signed agreements with partners from China on joint production and promotion of children’s animation on television.

The Russian capital is actively developing the film industry: in 2024, the first phase of the Moskino Cinema Park — a world-class venue — was launched. There are 18 full-scale sets and four pavilions for filming. They have already been visited by delegations from dozens of countries, including Brazil, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay. For example, the famous Serbian director Emir Kusturica decided to shoot his new project here. He and other experts were impressed by the quality and quantity of scenery stylized for different historical epochs. The territory also has a technology museum, warehouses, a hotel, an administrative building with workspaces and meeting rooms, and an educational center.

Major international events

The Moscow International Film Week was held for the first time last year. At its venues it was possible to see domestic and foreign films, visit excursions, take part in castings and master classes, and listen to lectures. The business program was joined by industry companies, producers and screenwriters from 47 countries. As a result, the Moscow City Government signed agreements with partners from India, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico and Egypt. The cooperation implies mutual support in the creation of films.

The works of authors from the Republic of South Africa, Iran, Tunisia and other countries were shown in the capital as part of the “Night of Cinema” event.

In addition, an international contest of video clips about cities WowMoscow 2024 was held. 294 applications from 12 countries were submitted for participation in it. The winner was a representative of Indonesia.

In December, the Moscow International Creative Industries Week was held. It united heads of movie studios, designers, publishers and other experts in the creative sphere from different countries. Moscow companies signed several agreements on the creation of joint films and cartoons with foreign partners.

A series of film expeditions were held for young citizens. They were arranged by the staff of the creative space “Gorky Film Campus”. The children visited Kazakhstan, Armenia, Turkey and other countries. The program included master classes in acting, screenwriting, public speaking and directing. As a result of the trips, the participants made short films, which were then shown at two international film festivals in Moscow.
