Smart meters and high-speed elevators: how import substitution plan to improve housing, utility and energy services is being implemented
Moscow-based companies have largely refused to import goods. They are using their own components and materials, producing equipment and also developing new technologies.

For many years, Moscow-based companies providing municipal services have been systematically working on import substitution. They are using more domestic materials and components and implementing their own plans in this area. Read on to find out how the import substitution plan to improve housing, utility and energy services is being implemented.

Domestic water treatment membranes

Mosvodokanal is extensively using domestic products, including reagents in drinking water treatment, pipes, shut-off and control valves, manholes, pumps, instrumentation, process equipment and much more.

This year, the Western water treatment plant started using domestic ultrafiltration membranes for water treatment instead of imports. The technology complements the traditional water treatment scheme and increases the efficiency of removing different classes of contaminants. According to research findings, Russian membranes as good as their foreign counterparts. In 2024, the station will exclusively use them.

In addition, Mosvodokanal has five production sites in the Lyubertsy, Western and Rublyovskaya water treatment plants. The company produces more than 200 types of products, including spare parts for imported and domestic equipment, various metal structures, gas treatment plants, control cabinets and low current systems.

Reflector lamps for flower seedlings

Ozelenenie has a large greenhouse where plants are grown all year round. In winter, this process becomes more complicated due to the lack of sunlight, so artificial lighting is used for flower seedlings. This year, instead of traditional LED lamps, reflector lamps developed by Russian specialists are used in greenhouses.

The new lamps feature an asymmetrical reflector profile coated with pure silver, providing volumetric lighting of plants, shadowless reflection of rays and also preventing the radiator from overheating. Due to the structure of the ribbed bulb profile, the rays do not fall back onto the burner, ensuring stable light output and a service life of more than 5 years.

The efficiency of reflector lamps is 95 per cent. They produce 15 to 20 per cent more light than their counterparts. Its power varies from 70 to 1000 watts. Lamps are selected for each plant depending on their characteristics.

Balls for overhead power lines

Rosseti Moscow Region’s share of import substitution is now 98 per cent. A systematic approach was needed to reduce the share of imported equipment. Currently, there is virtually no dependence on components produced abroad.

This year, the company started using special aluminum balls on overhead power lines for day and night markings. This domestic solution has replaced imported plastic devices.

The markers are used for warning aircraft pilots and oversized cargo carriers on railways and roads. Aluminum balls are more durable than plastic ones-their service life is at least 40 years. In addition, they are visible both during the day and at night due to the backlight.

The section of the 220 kV CHP-22-Chagino-7.8 overhead power line on Verkhnie Polya Street has already got new equipment.

Domestic gas equipment

Today, 95 per cent of the production components of the capital’s gas sector are manufactured in Russia, including at Mosgaz’s facilities. Five years ago, the share of foreign units and fittings was 40 per cent, but now dependence on imports is minimal.

Mosgaz offers products both for the gas complex and other customers. On the premises of the company, a full production cycle is arranged, from design and documentation development to 3D modeling and manufacturing. Specialists have developed and implemented standard lines of gas distributing plants and rooftop stations with a capacity of 5 to 100 megawatts.

Since 2022, the company has also been manufacturing automation and control cabinets for gas distribution and heat supply systems. The company has already replaced imported taps, valves, gas regulators and filters, fastening systems, boilers and pressure gauges.

This year, thanks to computer simulation systems and its own developments, Troitsky and Novomoskovsky Administrative Districts opened a new gas distributing plant called Desna with a throughput capacity of 100,000 cubic meters per hour. It was erected in less than six months due to the use of ready-to-operate blocks produced in Moscow.

The production development allows Mosgaz to attract qualified designers and multi-skilled workers to install high-tech equipment. These efforts increase the reliability and safety of the capital’s gas sector.

High-speed elevators and domestic elevator components

Moslift operates and maintains almost 70 per cent of the capital’s elevators. The company’s production and logistics center is capable of producing up to 3,000 lifts per year. Moscow elevators are being installed in new buildings under renovation programs, new clinics, apartment blocks after major repairs, office and shopping complexes.

The company produces passenger, freight, panoramic and hospital elevators. All of them are 95 per cent Russian-made.

In addition, the company has developed elevators with a maximum speed of up to 2.5 meters per second. They can be used for buildings up to 150 meters in height. The demand for high-speed models is associated with the construction of high-rise buildings in Moscow and other cities with a population of over a million.

The new elevator is designed to operate without a machine room: the winch is installed in the shaft. Now the high-speed model is undergoing certification to ensure that the product meets the requirements of the technical regulation. The certification is to be completed by the end of 2023.

This year, the company also started producing elevator components, including heat exchangers on supercapacitors to save energy, an input device to change voltage in power lines and beams for shaft and cabin doors.

Water treatment equipment

Mosvodostok uses about 85 per cent of domestic materials when servicing the drainage facilities, rivers and ponds. The company uses Russian cast-iron hatches and grids, asphalt concrete mixtures to repair and install storm drainage and tools to collect garbage at water bodies.

The company employs domestic hoses when reconstructing land drainage systems using the sanitation method. They are made of fiberglass material impregnated with special resins that harden when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. The high strength of the hose increases the service life and throughput of the pipeline by reducing the friction of water flow.

Russian pumping equipment and electric valves are necessary for the construction and reconstruction of treatment facilities with stable production cycles.

Domestic membranes are used to install a waterproofing system and prevent shallowing of water bodies.

Metering data collection and transmission

In 2023, the Unified Information-Computing Center in Moscow began testing new Russian-made data collection and transmission devices. In the long run, they will become part of a multi-channel system for commercial metering of utilities in the capital. The study was conducted as part of the pilot testing program of the Moscow Agency of Innovations subordinate to the Moscow Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development.

The technology allows users to transmit data from all meters (water, heating, electricity and others) to a citywide automated utility consumption analysis system in real time. It is being developed by the Moscow Department of Information Technologies.

The devices will collect and transmit performance indicators of the metering devices and utility consumption, quality, temperature and pressure data.

The Unified Information-Computing Center in Moscow has purchased the tested equipment. Now the devices are being installed in apartment blocks, including those being built under the renovation program, schools, hospitals and kindergartens.

The Moscow Agency of Innovations supports Russian manufacturers, helps new companies enter the market and develops the IT potential of the Russian capital.
