Five new methods of high-tech treatment of cardiovascular diseases to be used in Moscow

Continuous work is being carried out in Moscow to improve the quality and accessibility of high-tech medical care. Cardiovascular disease treatment is one of the core areas. In 2021-2022, five new types of high-tech surgeries were introduced into the medical practice of the city's hospitals.

"A stroke network that allows us to provide emergency high-tech assistance to patients with acute cardiac pathologies was created and has been operating successfully for many years in Moscow. Many surgical interventions that used to seem fantastic are now routinely performed by doctors in the Russian capital. These include, for example, thromboextractions in patients with ischemic stroke and coronary artery stenting," said Yelena Vasilyeva, Chief Physician of the Davydovsky City Clinical Hospital and Chief Cardiologist of Moscow.

At the same time, new methods of high-tech care continue to be introduced into the city's health care system, so that patients with cardiovascular diseases can receive the most up-to-date treatment.

"Over the past year, we launched five new high-tech treatment modalities. Now they are available to patients not only in federal centers but also in city hospitals. These are the most complex operations performed by doctors on the state-of-the-art equipment," said Yelena Vasilyeva.

Such interventions are necessary for patients with the most severe forms of disease. One of the new methods is hybrid, when two vascular teams work in one operating theater. They provide care for patients with multi-level lesions of the arteries in the lower limbs. It is the only way for some patients to avoid amputation.

Endovascular techniques of pulmonary blood flow restoration in patients with consequences of thromboembolisms (blockages) of the pulmonary artery were also introduced in the city hospitals. Such operations require fine work on the lung vessels. As a result, patients who have been experiencing constant shortness of breath and the need for an oxygen mask for years return to normal life.

In addition, Moscow cardiologists began to use new types of cardiac stimulation - optimizers. These devices are necessary for patients with severe heart failure. Also Moscow hospitals now offer sophisticated techniques for removing pacing electrodes that were previously implanted but no longer needed by the patient.

Moscow hospitals also perform other unique high-tech surgeries, some of them are the only ones in the world practice. For example, hybrid interventions in patients with ischemic stroke, when two teams of surgeons restore cerebral blood flow in complex multilevel lesions of cerebral vessels. Vascular and endovascular surgeons use both open surgery and intravascular clot removal techniques. Previously, it was technically impossible to restore blood flow (and thus save a life) in the most severe patients without such interaction. The Davydovsky City Clinical Hospital and several other hospitals began to perform surgeries.

Last year, a record number of high-tech operations - over 171,000 - were performed on patients in the Moscow city hospitals and Muscovites in federal and private centers. Most cases of such care fell within cardiovascular abnormalities.
