Moscow high-school children became the winners of the VI International Olympiad of Metropolises

Schoolchildren from Moscow took the first place in team competition of the VI International Olympiad of Metropolises. Sergei Sobyanin congratulated the winners on his page in the VKontakte social network.

Eight people have won medals. They are Ignaty Tarabrin (Marshall V. Tchuykov School), Gleb Ivanov (Educational complex “Vorobyovy Gory”), Ilya Gladyshev and Denis Mustafin (lyceum “Vtoraya shkola”), Roman Safonov (School of Center for Pedagogical Excellence), Vitaly Kurin and Fyodor Romashov (Specialized educational scientific center – Kolmogorov boarding school of Lomonosov Moscow State University) and Ivan Machugovsky (school No. 179). They took part at the competitions following their achievements at all-Russian and international tournaments. In the individual event boys demonstrated the best result in physics among other teams.

Also the teams from Chengtu (China), Bucharest (Romania), Krakow (Poland) and Saint-Petersburg became winners. The second place is shared by the teams from Hong-Gong, Hanoi, Sofia, Zagreb, Istanbul, Minsk, Yerevan, Belgrad, Budapest and Kishinev. Schoolchildren from Ulan Bator, Baku, Almaty, Sarajevo, Ljubljana, Tallinn, Nur-Sultan, Mexico, Osh, Lima and Banja Luka took the third place.

Representatives from Colombo and Podgorica took part at the Olympiad for the first time. Each team consisted of schoolchildren aged from 14 to 18. These are medal-winners of other competitions, the winners of the biggest international olympiads.

The competition took place on 6-13 December. The guys didn’t have to leave their countries to take part in it. The Olympiad included two basic rounds in four disciplines. On the competitions in physics and chemistry the participants must demonstrate their theoretical and practical knowledge. In math and informatics they solved problems. The degree of complexity corresponds with the level of the biggest international olympiads.

Before the main tournaments, the cross-subject team lightning round was held. Moscow residents took the first place in it with 72 points of 80. The team of Bucharest got 69 points, the team of Hong-Kong — 67 points. The teams of Hanoi and Krakow got 66 points each, the team of Saint-Petersburg — 64 points.

Schools from all over the world could try hand in the lightning round. They just had to register a team and to complete all the tasks offered to the participants out of competition. A total of 46 teams from different cities of the world took part in the lightning round. A separate scoring was provided for Moscow schools: the teams represented more than 220 educational institutions. School No. 1568 named after Pablo Neruda and school No. 444 became the best. Moscow children have all opportunities to reach olympiads of the highest level. In capital’s schools there are intensified instruction in principal subjects, projects “Mathematical vertical”, “IT-class in Moscow school”, “Engineering class in Moscow school” and much more.

The Olympiad of Metropolises is held since 2016 on the initiative of Sergei Sobyanin. For the last two years the competition was held in a distributed format: the teams took part without leaving their countries. In 2020 the teams from Moscow, Hanoi, Bucharest, Hong-Kong and Krakow became the best.
