This year, there are plans to build 91 km of roads in Moscow, which includes 19 flyovers, bridges, tunnels and 10 underground and overground pedestrian crossings, Sergei Sobyanin said in his blog.
“We decided to unite the North-Eastern and South-Eastern Chords into a new urban Motorway, the Moscow High-Speed Diameter (MHSD). Its size and significance will be comparable to those of the Moscow Ring Road. The 68-kilometer-long Motorway will connect the largest outbound Motorways: the North-Western Chord, Dmitrovskoye, Altufyevskoye, Yaroslavskoye and Shchyolkovskoye Motorways, the Entuziastov Motorway, Ryazansky Prospekt and Volgogradsky Prospekt, Yuzhnaya lateral road, Kashirskoye and Varshavskoye Motorways. Next to the Novokhokhlovskaya station, there will be an exit to the Third Ring Road,” the Moscow Mayor wrote.
In the north, the diameter will be continued by the M11 Moscow — St. Petersburg federal motorway, with the projected M12 Moscow — Kazan motorway in the east and the M2 Crimea federal motorway and the new Solntsevo — Butovo — Varshavskoe Motorway road in the south.
The first stage of the Moscow High-Speed Diameter construction (North-Eastern Chord) from Businovskaya interchange to Kosinskaya flyover is scheduled to be completed in 2022. The last large structure on this Motorway – the 2.4-kilometer-long major road flyover from Altufyevskoye to Dmitrovskoye Motorways – will be put into operation within a year. Now flyover spans are being mounted with the retaining walls erected.
The second stage of the Moscow High-Speed Diameter (South-Eastern Chord) will be commissioned in 2023.
“Millions of drivers will enjoy new traffic realities of faster and more convenient travels from one side of the city to another. The trip across Moscow avoiding the city center and traffic lights will take 40 minutes. Depending on the distance and time of the day, the travel time for drivers will be 10 to 50 minutes shorter. The road to Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports will be 20-25 minutes faster. There will be no transit of cargo transport here,” the Moscow Mayor told.
He says the Moscow High-Speed Diameter will be connected to the North-Western Chord in the north and Yuzhnaya lateral road in the south. Car drivers will have access to any Moscow district without congesting the Moscow Ring Road or the Third Ring Road.
Last year, the junction of the High-Speed Diameter and the North-Western Chord was opened. This year it will be connected to Yuzhnaya lateral road. The project provides for 13.3 km of roads, including four overpasses and four underground pedestrian crossings to be built near Bekhtereva Street.
Moscow Ring Road interchanges
“Since 2011, we have rebuilt 18 Moscow Ring Road interchanges. The program is 80% accomplished by now. Another four interchanges are underway. These include Ostashkovskaya and Altufyevskaya interchanges scheduled to be rebuilt this year. The Ostashkovskaya interchange will have two flyovers and two overpasses. In total, 8.7 km of roads and an overground pedestrian crossing near 30 Ostashkovskaya Street will be built,” Sergei Sobyanin emphasized.
Now road construction workers are erecting supports for overpasses and exits, installing a storm drain system and low current systems and assembling steel structure spans.

Another outdated cloverleaf interchange at the intersection of the Moscow Ring Road and Altufyevskoye Motorway is to be replaced. The new overpass will provide a comfortable drive through Altufyevskoye Motorway. The flyover will improve the exit from Altufyevskoye Motorway to the outer side of the Moscow Ring Road towards Dmitrovskoye Motorway. There will also be a new exit from the outer side of the Ring Road to Altufyevskoye Motorway towards the city center. The total length of roads within the project is 5.4 km.
The supports and spans of the overpass over the Moscow Ring Road, the temporary exits and utility systems are still in progress.

The Moscow Mayor emphasized that the rebuilding of Ostashkovskaya and Altufyevskaya interchanges will improve the transport infrastructure for about one million residents of Bibirevo, Lianozovo, Severnoye and Yuzhnoye Medvedkovo, Losinoostrovsky, Babushkinsky, Otradnoye, Severnoye districts, as well as residents of Mytishchi, Moscow Region.
Overpass through MCD-1
The old 39-meter-long overpass on Barclay Street will be replaced by a new 205-meter-long one. It will provide comfortable and safe traffic not only over the railroad tracks, but also over the northern alternate route of Kutuzovsky Prospekt, which is under construction now.
“The acceleration and deceleration lanes will be added on Barclay Street and Promyshlenny Proezd. We will build a direct junction between Vasilisa Kozhina Street and Promyshlenny Proezd. The intersection of Bagrationovsky Proezd and Oleko Dundich Street and area at 5 Barclay Street will have crosswalks,” Sergei Sobyanin mentioned.

Rebuilding the Staro-Rublevsky overpass and Ivan Franko Street
The renewed Staro-Rublyovsky overpass will go over the new Motorway and Moscow Central Diameter-1, enhancing the connection between Kutuzovsky Prospekt and Rublyovskoye Motorway. There will be exit from the overpass to the northern alternate route of Kutuzovsky Prospekt towards the Moscow Region and exit through the tunnel under construction to Gerasim Kurin Street.
The Mayor said the overpass would have one-way, two-lane traffic, including the flyover – the exit to the northern alternate route towards the Moscow Region. The project involves Ivan Franko Street widening to make two lanes in each direction instead of one.
“Once completed, these road projects will provide additional routes for drivers to get around the city, reduce traffic congestion and improve the transport conditions in Moscow,” Sergei Sobyanin concluded.
