The Peking used to be one of the best hotels of the Soviet era, with high ceilings, plaster mouldings, precious wood, granite and marble finishes. Presently, it is listed as a regional architectural landmark.

The restoration of the well-known Peking Hotel on Bolshaya Sadovaya Street has begun, Sergei Sobyanin shares on his MAX channel.

The monumental Stalinist Empire complex was designed by Moscow’s Chief Architect Dmitry Chechulin and built in 1939–1956 as the key element of Triumfalnaya Square’s ensemble.

“It used to be one of the best hotels of the Soviet era, with high ceilings, plaster mouldings, precious wood, granite and marble finishes. The first Chinese restaurant in Moscow opened there in 1957. They used to deliver ingredients for it from China by air. Presently, the hotel is listed as a regional architectural landmark. Its comprehensive restoration is starting now and will proceed in stages,” shares the Moscow Mayor.

The facility facing 2nd Brestskaya Street will be restored first: its roof, façades and interiors have to be renovated, structures strengthened and modern engineering systems installed to replace the old ones. The project is expected to be complete in 2027.

At the second stage of the project, the hotel’s rooms will be moved to the already renovated part of the building, and the work in the facility facing the Garden Ring will start. The final stage will involve the restoration of the central tower, renovating its central entrance and using historical examples to reconstruct its oak wood portal, the doors with massive fancy handles, and other elements.

“A thorough restoration is also planned for the Peking Hotel’s interiors with their unique plaster mouldings, panels and precious stone finishes,” adds Sergei Sobyanin.
