Moscow Mayor: Moscow’s main surface transport routes turn 10
The capital’s route network has evolved into a large-scale system that constantly adapts to the city’s needs.

Moscow marks 10 years of main surface transport routes. They run along the capital’s main streets and connect the city centre with outlying districts, complementing the Metro, Moscow Central Circle, and Moscow Central Diameters. Sergei Sobyanin shared how the main routes have changed travels around the city on his Max channel.

“The key principle is a regular surface transport service with minimal intervals. A great deal of work has been done to upgrade the capital’s route network,” the Moscow Mayor shares.

A total of 77 express and main routes have been launched; five new routes in each category were introduced in 2025. Two more have started operating this year, while another four are due to open by the end of 2026.

Modern Russian-made electric buses operate on the main routes. Buses have been reassigned to routes with higher demand. This has reduced service intervals and passenger waiting times.

Five years ago, about 200 routes in the Central and Southern administrative districts were adjusted, with new stops added and navigation improved. Since then, passenger traffic on these routes has increased by almost 25 per cent.

“Over the past 10 years, the main routes have expanded far beyond the original area of changes in central and southern Moscow. The route network has evolved into a large-scale system that constantly adapts to the city’s needs. Travelling has become more comfortable and regular,” Sergei Sobyanin notes.

Passenger traffic on buses, electric buses and trams is growing every year. With the start of the new school year and the end of the vacation season, the number of surface transport trips has reached 4.9 million per day.

Particular attention is now being paid to new residential districts, stations forming part of the rail transport network and expanding transport services, including in the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky administrative districts.
