Sergei Sobyanin: Moscow museums and exhibitions were visited more than 17 million times last year

Moscow is one of the leading major cities in the world in terms of the number of museums and exhibition halls. There are over 450 federal, city, municipal, departmental and private museums in the capital. In 2024, Moscow residents visited museums and exhibitions more than 17 million times. The news was announced by Sergei Sobyanin.

Institutions managed by the Department of Culture of Moscow held over 1,100 exhibitions, and over 600 concerts, festivals, theatrical performances, lectures, conferences, forums and other events. These were viewed by 1.7 million people.

Since 2017, the city has been organizing the educational projects Study Day at the Museum and Museums for Children, under which pupils from Moscow schools can visit city museums and exhibition halls free of charge.

And since 2019, during Moscow Museum Week, the third week of each month, anyone can visit the city’s museums for free. Over 4.5 million people have taken advantage of this opportunity.

“In 2024, we opened three renovated sites: The Multimedia Complex of Contemporary Arts on Ostozhenka Street, the museum sites of the K. A. Timiryazev Biological Museum and the Darwin Museum at VDNKh,” reported Sergei Sobyanin in a post on his Telegram channel.

For the first time in almost 80 years, the Museum of Moscow has redesigned its main display dedicated to the history of the city.

The Museum plans to organize about 30 major exhibitions in 2025–2027. For example, this year it plans to organize a project entitled The Image of Moscow in Russian Art in partnership with the Russian Museum and art museums in other regions.
