Sergei Sobyanin: One of the leading blood transfusion centers operates at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute

The Scientific Department of Biotechnology and Transfusiology at the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine celebrates its 95th anniversary. Sergei Sobyanin described the Department’s work in a post on his Telegram channel.
“On March 23, 1930, surgeon Sergei Yudin performed the first fibrinolytic blood transfusion, saving the life of a patient with acute blood loss. From this moment began the history of the unique department today known as the Scientific Department of Biotechnology and Transfusiology at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute. Now it is one of the leading transfusion centers in Moscow. Every year, more than 20 tons of blood are collected here - more than in any multidisciplinary hospital in Russia,” wrote the Mayor of Moscow.

The specialists have at their disposal a unique cryobank, which provides one of the largest stocks of red blood cells in Russia and the largest stock of platelets in the country. The samples are stored in liquid nitrogen for more than 10 years. Thanks to the cryobank, the department can help patients with rare blood types at any time.
Automated processors reduce the time required to isolate blood components procurement by a factor of 1.5, and special machines return the patient’s own red blood cells to the patient directly during surgery. This is especially important in medical emergencies.
“Today, the Biotechnology and Transfusiology Department at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute is not just a blood transfusion center, but one of the key elements of Moscow’s emergency medicine system. Innovative technologies that save lives every day are developed and implemented here,” - noted Sergei Sobyanin.
Specialists of the department create unique collagen dressings for healing burns, work on developing new methods of creating bone and tissue grafts and other projects.
