Since 2012, 22 Moscow Ring Road interchanges with a total road length of over 180 kilometers have been built and reconstructed in the capital.

Sergei Sobyanin has opened the reconstructed interchange at the intersection of the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) and Altufyevskoye Motorway.

“Today is a big day - we have completed the reconstruction of the interurban roads, interchanges intersecting with MKAD, 22 interchanges in total. It is a huge structure with tunnels, overpasses and bridges. The complex and extensive work was done almost simultaneously without halting traffic but with a major relocation of engineering structures and communications. Today we are opening the last interchange on Altufyevskoye Motorway,” notes the Moscow Mayor.

Altufyevskoye Motorway interchange

Reconstruction of the MKAD interchange with Altufyevskoye Motorway was launched in 2020 and was completed in September 2024. The project involved replacing the outdated cloverleaf structure with a modern stack interchange with greater capacity.

“The work was complex as it was done almost without halting the traffic. Now travelling along the Moscow Ring Road has become faster and safer. Today we have opened the last interchange on Altufyevskoye Motorway,” Sergei Sobyanin writes on his Telegram channel

Specialists have built 5.4 kilometers of roads in total, including two artificial structures with a total length of more than 0.8 kilometers.

The new 300-meter-long Moscow Ring Road overcrossing ensures convenient straight traffic of Altufyevskoye Motorway. A 550-meter-long two-lane overpass has improved the exit from it to the outer side of the Moscow Ring Road towards Dmitrovskoye Motorway. Experts have also built a new exit from the outer side of the Moscow Ring Road onto Altufyevskoye Motorway towards the center, 496 meters long, including two one-way traffic lanes, and reconstructed the existing exits from and onto the Moscow Ring Road, 1.4 kilometers long.

On the inner and outer sides of the Moscow Ring Road, side exits were built with speed change lanes in the area of the intersection with Altufyevskoye Motorway covering a total of 2.1 kilometers of roads. As part of the landscaping project, the adjacent area will get four hectares of lawns.

The interchange reconstruction improves the capacity of the northern section of the Moscow Ring Road and Altufyevskoye Motorway as well as reduces traffic congestion on the adjacent road network. The traffic of the sections of the MKAD outer side will be reduced from the Podushkinsky overpass to Altufyevskoye Motorway (up to nine per cent), Altufyevskoye Motorway from Vologodsky Proyezd to Proektiruemy Proyezd No. 6433 (up to 17 per cent) as well as the exit to MKAD from the Vesna shopping center (up to 45 per cent).

Transport accessibility of the Lianozovo and Bibirevo areas (Moscow) and Mytishchi district (Moscow Region) accommodating more than 550,000 people has been improved. The reconstruction of Altufyevskoye Motorway and Ostashkovskoye Motorway interchanges, located approximately six kilometers from each other, helps to improve transport services for approximately one million residents.

Reduced traffic congestion on the Moscow Ring Road has benefited millions of motorists and public transport passengers who regularly or occasionally travel along the northern and north-eastern sections of this motorway.

22 modern transport hubs: complex reconstruction of MKAD interchanges

In recent years, the construction and reconstruction of MKAD interchanges has been one of the priorities for the development of the capital's transport system. In addition, the Moscow Government has completed complex work to expand the Moscow Ring Road roadway by constructing side roads and speed change lanes as well as to develop the adjacent street and road network.

The work was planned to coincide with the reconstruction of the interurban roads within the Moscow Ring Road and the Moscow Region. The project significantly improves their capacity and ensures full integration of the transport infrastructure of Moscow and the Moscow Region.

Since 2012, 22 MKAD interchanges with a total road length of over 180 kilometers have been built and reconstructed in the capital.
