Sergei Sobyanin: a Sokol-based campus of the future to be created for Rosbiotech

The Moscow Government continues to actively contribute to upgrading local universities and improving surrounding areas. Next in line is the Russian Biotechnological University (Rosbiotech), the flagship of R&D in biotechnology and health care. Sergei Sobyanin shared plans to improve Rosbiotech’s campus on Vrubel Street in Sokol District.
Today, the Russian Biotechnological University is running a project to create a biocity. The project includes renovation of a 670-student dormitory and construction of an educational and laboratory complex. To grant the students’ request, the site will also be substantially landscaped. It is far from being well-arranged now: there are no places to relax and it is poorly greened and lit.
“As a result, the campus will be a space where not only specialists and students but also everyone will be able to attend free educational programs, play sports, relax and participate in various citywide events. We will also make arrangements for demonstrating innovative solutions,” Sergei Sobyanin wrote.
The project provides for the creation of three functional sections on the site.
The first one will be in the courtyard of the main university building, with access only for students and professors. Now it is used for technical and domestic needs, but later co-working pavilions and a lecture hall will be located there, plus a summer stage with a media screen. The upgraded space will easily transform into a place for communication, education or relaxation. It will also have an amphitheater and a small dry deck fountain.




The second section will be located between buildings A and B. Now it is just a passage to the buildings and a parking lot. After landscaping, the area will remain reserved for pedestrians, but it will look completely different as there will be a mini-sports cluster with table tennis tables, a streetball court and an amphitheater-style grandstand, in addition to a workout area and artificial hills to be created using geoplastics to accommodate an original playground for kids. Trees will also be planted to provide natural shade during summer heat.


This section will be the place for a gastropark with food trucks, modular cafes and bistros to offer national cuisines. The eateries will be built using sea containers as they are easy to assemble and can be firmly attached to each other. So, the structures will be used to create one- and two-story pavilions to jointly form a semi-closed area with tables and benches for relaxation in the open air. Trees and shrubs will be planted in the center of the site and small flower beds of cereal varieties will also be laid out.


The third space designed for outdoor activities is to be built between the college, the dormitory buildings and a residential house. This area, currently hosting an old sports ground, will soon be turned into an all-round facility for basketball, volleyball and futsal, to be enjoyed not only by the students but also by the residents of neighboring houses.
The space will also feature a small stand, a workout area, weight machines, a field for panna football, as well as ping pong tables. A landscaped summer terrace and a leisure zone will also be available to visitors.
“I am confident that upon completion, Rosbiotech’s campus will become another great point of attraction for local residents,” concluded Sergei Sobyanin.
